Age no obstacle for 'greybeard' pacer
AGE is proving no obstacle for consistent pacer Iamawingate.
Despite reaching 'greybeard' status, Iamawingate is racing "in his usual honest fashion" as evident by his success in Shepparton last night.
Making his debut as a seven-year-old, Iamawingate registered his fourth win at the ripe age of 12 to take his tally to 23 wins and 56 placings from 211 starts for earnings of $146,890.
Pleased with the gelding's performance, trainer Adam Stephens is positive Iamawingate "has still got more wins in him yet".
"He isn't slowing down at all," Stephens said. "I was just talking to my brother and mentioned the times he is running are pretty much the same now as they were when he first started.
"He was seven before he started racing, so he's still got young legs really.
"He did a top job last night and has pulled up great, so I'd say he has still got more wins in him yet."
Driven by James Herbertson, Iamawingate was weaved through traffic from his inside of the second row draw to find the lead as early pacemaker, Abercrombie Limbo, was eased to take a trail.
Proving too slick along the home straight, the son of I Am The Way scored by three metres from Rockstar Leo, with Abercrombie Limbo a metre-and-a-half away third.
"I was expecting a good run from him as his run before in Maryborough showed the writing was on the wall," Stephens said. "By the time he got out it was too late, but the run gave me confidence before Shepparton.
"He was always going to need luck from his draw over the short trip, which he got, and he made the most of it."
