Aiming to go one better than star dam
CONNECTIONS of handy youngster Lets Go Lorna hope she can continue to go one better than her dam in coming weeks.
Contesting a Vicbred heat in Melton last night, Lets Go Lorna caused an upset by scoring as a S19 shot for trainer Gary Murnane.
By Always B Miki, the three-year-old is from former top mare Berisari, which finished second in a 2015 Vicbred heat.
Berisari was then runner-up behind My Bella Starr in the Final a fortnight later.
"It will be great if she can go one better than her mum," Murnane said. "Berisari was the first horse I bred and she did a great job.
"She was only beaten a short half-head in the Final. She went on to win some nice races and over $300,000, but I would have liked that Vicbred win.
"With a bit of luck her name will make it on to the honour roll as the dam in a couple of weeks."
Driven by James Herbertson, Lets Go Lorna was settled in the 'death seat' from barrier six before being shuffled two-back in the running line as Alifetimeforliving set the pace.
Three-wide around the final bend, the filly was angled back to the pegs before finishing along the sprint lane to score by three metres from the pacemaker.
Tivoli battled on to be five metres away after racing in the breeze.
"I am very excited with her run," Murnane said. "I didn't really expect that, but she just keeps improving.
"After she finished second in Charlton four days earlier, I almost scratched her from the heat, but I'm glad I didn't."
Taking her record to two wins and two seconds from seven starts, the three-year-old rated 1:56.2 over 2240 metres, with her time the slowest of the heats.
Recent Victoria Oaks winner Soho Americano claimed top honours with her 1:55.2 performance, while Beach Diamond, which was runner-up in the Oaks, rated 1:56.
