Aiming to join select sorority
SUPER squaregaiter Keayang Zahara will attempt to join a select sorority when she heads to Maryborough Sunday.
Undefeated from 10 starts, Keayang Zahara will take on the ‘boys’ in the Victoria Trotters’ Derby.
Success will see the Marg Lee-trained youngster become just the eighth filly to complete the Oaks and Derby double.
Lunar Lass was the ground breaker in 1984, with Corrans Image (1990), Galleons Paradise (’97), Solar Fire (’98), Zesta (2002), Une Belle Allure (2017) and Pink Galahs (2020) following suit.
Keayang Zahara registered the first half of the equation when she outclassed her rivals in the Oaks at Tabcorp Park Melton a fortnight ago.
The daughter of Volstead backed-up to secure a Derby heat in Maryborough last weekend.
Solar Fire also won the New South Wales Trotters' Derby, but missed the chance of another double as the Oaks was only added to the calendar the following year.
Victory will see Keayang Zahara become the first trotter to complete a clean sweep of Victoria's and New South Wales' Blue Ribands.
Only one pacer - the mighty Argent - has managed the feat, which she achieved in 1956!
As for Keayang Zahara's prospects, she faces a difficult task from the inside of the back row in the Group One.
Fellow heat winner, Pinnie, has fared better for trainer Andy Gath, with the filly drawn barrier two, with New South Wales raider Valtino also predicted to settle in a prominent position from gate four.
Valtino is no stranger to Group One glory south of the Murray, having won last season's Vicbred Super Series Final for trainer Blake Fitzpatrick.
