Another record for freakish trotter
Keayang Zahara

FREAKISH squaregaiter Keayang Zahara created another slice of history in Cranbourne tonight.

Proving a class above her rivals in the Trotters' Cup, Keayang Zahara took her bankroll to $1,010,535 to become the first Australian-bred trotting mare to surpass $1million.

With trainers Marg and Paddy Lee setting the daughter of Volstead for the Great Southern Star in a fortnight, Keayang Zahara appears destined to become the richest trotting mare on this side of the equator - a title belonging to Queen Elida with earnings of $1,103,470.

Kiwi-bred Queen Elida was retired with 37 wins and 34 placings from 88 starts.

Incredibly, Keayang Zahara achieved the feat with 23 wins and a second from just 24 outings, with 12 of those at Group One level - extending her Australian record.

Immortal New Zealand champion Lyell Creek lays claim to the southern hemisphere stance with 15 trotting Group Ones.

Then there is the prospect of Keayang Zahara collecting Harness Racing Victoria's $500,000 bonus.

In a stellar promotion, HRV will pay the sensational sum to any trotter which wins four specified races. One of those victories has to be in the Great Southern Star in Melton on February 14.

Keayang Zahara has won the first three!

Bonuses are not included in a trotter or pacer's earnings.

As for her latest success, Keayang Zahara worked to the lead from barrier four before completing a nine-and-a-half metre win from Rockinwithattitude.

Im Bobby was 12-and-a-half metres away third as the winner rated 1:58.2 over 2080 metres.
