Back to best following mystery setback
HANDY trotter Lizzies Son registered a well-deserved win in Shepparton last night.
Causing an upset as a $10 shot, Lizzies Son notched his first victory since March.
In between victories the Dennis Paton-trained gelding endured a mystery setback, which sidelined the son of Majestic Son for eight weeks.
"He was overdue for that win," Paton said. "He put in some good runs last time in, including a pair of slashing seconds, which even led to someone calling to buy him, but the sale fell through.
"His run after the call was terrible and he wasn't really eating well. I got his blood done, but we couldn't find anything wrong.
"The next time he pulled like a maniac and I knew something was wrong, so I drenched him and put him in a paddock and he has came back great.
"He's licking his feed bin clean and is feeling terrific.
"I put him in a stand first-up, but he had no luck, now he has come out and won, which I was pretty confident he would do."
With Paton in the cart, Lizzies Son led throughout from barrier three to score by four-and-a-half metres from Faith Full.
Starlight Red was three-and-a-half metres away third as the winner rated 2:02.6 over 1680 metres.
"It was a good run in the wet as it was pretty heavy last night," Paton said. "I'm glad to see him showing signs of being back to his best.
"Hopefully he stays that way and goes on with the job.
"I've nominated him for the concession drivers' race in Maryborough next week, so we'll see how he goes."
