Bargain buy chasing Group One glory
ALL but given away, bargain buy Suga Daddy has an opportunity to complete a fairy tale this weekend.
Sacked by his fourth trainer earlier this year, Suga Daddy was purchased by Luke Sutherland who transferred the trotter to astute horseman Stephen Clarke.
Showing immediate improvement when runner-up upon debut, Suga Daddy then broke a 20-month drought from the winners' circle by scoring at his next start.
Suga Daddy was then third before emerging triumphant at his next four outings!
Those wins were followed by a handy second in a Vicbred Super Series heat in Geelong last week, with that effort earning the four-year-old a berth in the $100,000 Final in Melton tomorrow night.
"He has been a marvellous find," Clarke said. "He was only a cheapy...a couple of grand as far as I know.
"I can't say what's improved him, but he had a lot of gear on and I stripped him off and he's doing well."
To be driven by Connor Clarke, Suga Daddy has drawn to settle in a prominent position from barrier four, which will "give him plenty of options."
TAB Fixed Odds have the son of Angus Hall listed at $19, with top squaregaiter The Locomotive a $1.28 favourite from gate three
"We don't have any stupid thoughts to think we're going to win," Clarke said. "I'll be happy with a top five finish...but we're in it and anything can happen.
"The faster they go the better it'll be for us as he'll keep plugging away.
"I haven't met Luke, Connor knows him, but he is coming down from Queensland to watch the race and it will also be the first time he has seen the horse in the flesh.
"Who knows, maybe Luke being trackside for the first time could be a miracle waiting to happen!"
