CALLAGHAN Jack JACallaghan MENANGLE Rising Stars 24OCT2020

TALENTED concession reinsman Jack Callaghan is aiming to become one of the youngest Inter Dominion winners.

After piloting Spirit Of St Louis throughout last week's heats - which included a victory during the second round - Callaghan will partner the gelding in Saturday night's Final at Tabcorp Park Melton.

Success will see Callaghan become the fourth youngest winner of the prestigious Championship since its inception in 1936.

By the time he lines the Belinda McCarthy-trained pacer up behind the mobile, it will be 81 days since Callaghan celebrated his 21st birthday.

Now a highly-respected veteran, Chris Lewis was still 'wet-behind-the-ears' when he reached the industry's pinnacle in 1976.

At 20 years and 185 days Lewis captured the Adelaide-based edition with Carclew and remains the youngest winner.

Making the most of his 'catch drive' in 1989, Scott Stewart emerged victorious in the Perth Final with Jodie's Babe at 21 years 66 days.

Last season Josh Gallagher won the Final with Boncel Benjamin at Club Menangle 25 days after his 21st birthday.

As for Callaghan, he is rated a $14 TAB Fixed Odds shot in his quest for glory after Spirit Of St Louis draw barrier four.

Callaghan is one of three 'junior' drivers in the race, with Cameron Hart and Jack Laugher 23-year-olds.

Given it's not polite to mention a lady's age, we'll declare 40-year-olds Luke McCarthy and Gavin Fitzpatrick as the field's Methuselahs!
