Chips gets the cash

CHALLENGING on the outside when the leader jumped it off, Cash N Chips pounced on the opportunity and went on to capture last night’s $22,250 championship of the Margaret Provost Memorial Trot for three-year-olkd fillies at The Meadows.

Treasure Gems K, the 4-5 favourite, was trotting with a clear lead through the final turn when she made an unforced break, leaving only Cash N Chips and the pocket-sitting Wonmyheart Hanover in position to score.

Cash N Chips persevered for Hunter Myers and downed Wonmyheart Hanover by a half length in a career-best 1:56.1, with Franklin County third.

Steve Bush trains the daughter of Cash Hall and Sugar N Chips and co-owns with Alvira Fassett.

In the $16,000 Open Handicap Pace, The First Step overcame a tough trip — he was caught outside twice — to prevail in 1:51.3 for Ronnie Wrenn, Jr., trainer Ron Burke and owners Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi LLC and Phillip Collura.

Lyons Skipper was a neck back in second while Rock Candy completed the ticket.

The son of Betterthancheddar pushed his bankroll to $193,184 and, in the process, ended the four-race winning streak of his stablemate, Windsong Leo, who finished fourth.

Dave Palone and Mike Wilder each piloted three winners on the 13-race card.
