Cup winner enjoying life after racing
THOUGH not told often enough, from time-to-time we do hear stories about horses enjoying life after racing.
Some find their way into the dressage arena, others in show competitions and even carriage clubs...then there are the likes of Imperial Whiz.
A well-performed trotter, Imperial Whiz raced across eight seasons, with his 250 starts netting 25 wins, 26 seconds and 27 thirds for a bankroll of $266,702.
Retired earlier this year, the son of successful sire Imperial Count has found himself in the care of Richelle Schliefert.
A thoroughbred convert, Schliefert also owns Piment Rouge, an unraced daughter of Orlando Vici.
While Piment Rouge performs within the dressage and 3PE communities, as well as the occasional show, Imperial Whiz is simply enjoying a life of luxury as a companion.

"I grew up in Queensland and always had thoroughbreds," Schliefert said. "Funnily enough, I lived next door to a pacing family who kept trying to convert me, but I never gave it a thought.
"Now I live in Victoria and absolutely love standardbreds.
"Their temperament is fantastic as they are usually well-handled. They're so naturally quiet...not as flighty as thoroughbreds as nothing much really phases them.
"Piment Rouge was my first and she is just beautiful, so when I heard Imperial Whiz was available for a permanent home, I didn't hesitate in adopting him."
As mentioned, Piment Rouge is a dressage performer, with Schliefert also using the mare in her riding club after the five-year-old was broken into saddle by renowned horsewoman Elle Moro.
Although she is "loving" the pleasure of riding Piment Rouge, Schliefert never considered putting a saddle on Imperial Whiz.
"Whiz is just a gem," Schliefert said. "In fact, I just had his feet done and wormed him this morning.
"From the moment I got him, I knew he would simply be a companion. He's had quite a few starts and he's earned his retirement, so he will just enjoy his life.
"He's let down and spends his time keeping company, picking grass and remembering his days on the track!
"Now it's all about relaxing and living out his days in comfort."
