Draw not a concern with boom youngster
CONSIDERED one of the most exciting youngsters produced in recent years, Always Hot will need to live up to the hype if he is to emerge triumphant at Club Menangle tomorrow night.
Boasting a perfect record from seven starts - including last season's Vicbred Super Series Final - Always Hot is engaged in the New South Wales Derby for trainer Emma Stewart.
The exceptionally-bred son of Always B Miki earned a berth in the Blue Riband by capturing the Simpson Memorial at the world class venue on February 8.
Always Hot's rivals - including five of his stablemates - gained entry into the Group One via last weekend's heats, while he won a low class race in Melton.
As for his pending assignment, Always Hot is not only poised to face his toughest assembly of opponents, he has drawn horrifically.
Receiving barrier 10, the colt slots into eight with the removal of the emergencies.
Despite the obstacle, TAB Fixed Odds have Always Hot listed as a $1.85 favourite, with Queenslander, Fate Awaits, considered the main danger at $4 from gate two.
A member of the Grant Dixon stable, Fate Awaits has won six of his 11 starts, with four placings also to his credit.
The three-year-old's wins include the $500,000 Protostar Slot Race and New South Wales Breeders' Challenge.
"The draw has made it tough, but we're not overly concerned," Stewart said."We've made no secret of the fact we think he is one of the best young horses we have ever trained.
"As long as he gets a clear run, we're pretty confident he can win the Derby."
Stewart is no stranger to glory in the Derby, having won the 2014 and '15 editions with Major Secret and Ideal For Real before returning to secure the 2018 running with Poster Boy.
