DISCERNMENT

IT DIDN'T take long for Heath Bourke to go from golden child to possibly being left out of the will.

Thanks to Myras Mint's performance in Bathurst last night, Bourke was top of the list among his siblings.

Bred by Bourke and owned by his mother Myra, the Anton Golino-trained filly, qualified for next week's Bathurst Tiara Final after finishing second in her heat.

As such, Myras Mint will provide Myra with her first Group One runner.

On the downside, Bourke represented his mother during barrier draw, with Myras Mint to begin from barrier seven.

To make matters worse, Bourke also bred and owns Discernment, which made her way into the Final by winning her heat.

Adding insult to injury, Bourke did the draw for Discernment, with the Sam Barker-trained daughter of Captaintreacherous gaining the pole.

"This is the first one Mum has owned solely and will fly up for the Final," Bourke said. "She's 82 and still very active.

"The instruction from Anton was 'don't get a bad draw', but I got seven, so I might not be her favourite child at the moment!

"I drew the pole for myself, which gives Discernment her chance to be right in the mix."

With two of his breed in the $150,000 decider, Bourke explained this will be one of his last opportunities to secure a two-year-old Group One.

"I had two in the heats last night, so to get both through to the Final is a thrill," Bourke said. "I've been breeding for quite a few years, but that I've stopped now.

"It started as a hobby, breeding my dad's broodmares for myself, but I went into commercial breeding six or seven years ago.

"I have been breeding seven or eight foals a year with the eye of selling at the sales, but with the state of the industry, particularly in Victoria, I haven't bred any this season."
