Exciting youngster ready to take command
VICTORIAN pacer Fighter Command will represent Tasracing in next month’s The Eureka at Club Menangle thanks to his track record performance in Hobart during the weekend.
Eligible for the $80,000 The Beautide as a Tasbred, Fighter Command blitzed his opposition to secure a berth in the world's richest pacing event on September 7.
Scoring in a track record 1:55.3 - slashing a second from Pachacuti’s 2014 mark - the son of Always B Miki took his tally to eight wins and a third from 11 starts for trainer Jess Tubbs.
TAB Fixed Odds immediately dropped Fighter Command's price to $7, with Never Ending heading the market at $3.50.
Don Hugo splits the pair at $5.50.
With Tubbs' reinsman-husband, Greg Sugars, in the cart, Fighter Command was beaten for speed from the pole as Reely Nauti crossed to the lead from gate two.
Promptly angled away from the pegs, Fighter Command was send forward to find the front, with the remainder of the 2090-metres journey becoming a procession.
Never seriously challenged, the gelding cruised to a 16-metre win from Nyack, with De Goey five-and-a-half metres away third.
"He had to do a little work early to find the front, but he finished it off well," Sugars said. "If anything, he was feeling a bit too fresh and wanted to go on with it, so I figured I'd let him go and give the others plenty to chase.
"At this stage he is still a big baby, but we're confident he will give a good showing in The Eureka."
