Grand plans for underutilised facility
HARNESS Racing South Australia and Gawler Harness Racing Club are pleased to announce they have entered into a Heads of Agreement for the long-term lease of the Gawler harness racing facility.
A recent feasibility study conducted by HRSA identified Gawler as a highly viable location based on several key requirements for the sport, both now and in the years ahead.
The Gawler facility will be further developed under HRSA's management, with initial improvements expected to include the installation of extra stalls, lights, viewing area / function room in the coming months and years.
HRSA can also explore additional and multi-purpose revenue streams that will maximise the output of the facility and inject more funds into the industry.
It's important to note that HRSA has no plans to discontinue or disrupt racing at Globe Derby Park.
Also noteworthy is the acknowledgement of GHRC’s history, heritage, and best interests. GHRC will retain control of certain sections of the property, excluded from the lease.
HRSA Chair Dr Carlo D’Ortenzio sees this as a watershed moment for the industry, and comments
“HRSA is delighted to be entering into such an arrangement that will benefit not just those connected to Gawler, but the broader SA harness industry.
“Managing industry assets is perhaps the most important topic on the agenda across all Principle Racing Authorities currently, meaning it’s our responsibility to have one eye on the current and one into the future. HRSA looks forward to working with all stakeholders to ensure our
future remains bright.”
GHRC President Rob Curnow stated “This is exciting news for our industry in SA. One of the key motivations at GHRC for entering into this arrangement was to ensure the long-term viability and relevance of our club, allowing us to continue serving our members and the industry for as long as harness racing exists.
“This collaboration will allow Harness Racing SA to develop the complex into a real hub, maximising the capabilities that exist at the Gawler facility.”
