He is the best horse I have ever trained
WHEN it comes to big statements before a major race, none get much grander than Freddie Taiba's declaration.
Discussing his prospects ahead of Saturday night's Breeders' Crown Final in Melton, Taiba declared his entrant - Nathan Street - is the best he has trained.
That's huge considering Taiba put the polish on former star youngster, Sushi Sushi.
Emerging as the best of his crop, Sushi Sushi won seven of his 15 starts as a two-year-old - with seven placings also to his credit - before remaining undefeated from 13 outings in Australia and New Zealand at three.
Sushi Sushi's haul included victories in five Group Ones, including the 2011 Breeders' Crown Final.
Nathan Street's record sits at five wins from nine starts, with the latest coming in a semi-final of the futurity last weekend.
Last month the son of Lazarus captured the Group One New South Wales Breeders' Challenge Final at Club Menangle.
"He is a complete and perfect racehorse," Taiba said. "He has gate speed, manners and stamina.
"He's matured as the season has gone on, and since taking him to Sydney, the penny has really dropped.
"The way he worked this morning, he is the best horse I have ever trained....he's a real excitement machine!"
With Jack Trainor making the trip from NSW to partner the colt in the $250,000 decider, Nathan Street has drawn to lead from the pole.
TAB Fixed Odds have Nathan Street listed on the third row of betting at $5, with Timmy Rictor and Stormryder the $1.80 favourite and $4 second elect for premier horsewoman Emma Stewart.
"I'm pretty confident now," Taiba said.
"I was before the draw, but now even more so after it.
"I think we are the one to beat and it will take a mighty horse to beat him."
