Hoping to continue riding wave
WONNERUP breeder Terry Ferguson is hoping the success from the Sydney APG sale, where he sold a colt for $135,000, will flow onto the Perth auction on Sunday.
Ferguson sent his colt by Captaintreacherous from Bettor Copagoodone, a close relation to $2million earner Catch A Wave, to Sydney and he made second top lot of the sale on February 16 at $140,000.
“We were very happy with the result,” Ferguson said. “He was bought by Andy Gath for the connections of Catch A Wave.
“It was about the result we were expecting, and he has gone to top stable, so everything worked at well.
“At the Sydney sale, buyers were prepared to pay for the lots they wanted. I hope the trend continues in Perth.
“I am winding down the racing side of the operation, so it would be good to sell all the yearlings on Sunday. But they will have reserves.
“I have kept 10 broodmares and will concentrate on the breeding side going forward.”
Ferguson will offer five yearlings at the 2025 APG Perth Yearling Sale on Sunday under his Seahorse Racing banner.
He has four colts and a filly out of young, well performed race mares from his strongest maternal families, including a handsome colt (Lot 402) by Stay Hungry from tough campaigner Bettorgrinanbarit (1.56.6, $98K).

The dam is a sister to four winners, including Daintys Daughter classic winner Captains Beachbabe (1.56, $81K).
This colt’s third dam, Beach Madam, is a half-sister to Little Brown Jug winner and legendary sire Fake Left.
Interestingly, he has a double cross of Beach Towel. His sire’s paternal grandam and his mother’s maternal grandam are both by the acclaimed speed sire.
This cross, Stay Hungry over a Bettors Delight mare, produced last season’s brilliant colt Louie Vee (1.55.6, $33K), who won his first two two-year-old starts in February and followed it up with a close second in the $125,000 APG Colts Sale Classic Final.
“They are all really nice youngsters. It is hard to pick a standout, but the Stay Hungry colt would probably be the most striking,” Ferguson said.
“They all have strong points. The first colt in the sale (Lot 312) has a full brother (The Last King Of Capel) in the two-year-old colts' APG Final on Friday night. He has drawn wide unfortunately but he is going well. This year’s colt is probably a better type.
“The filly is by Sweet Lou and her dam has already produced a couple of nice race fillies.”
Another exciting Seahorse youngster is Lot 374, a colt by $2million earner Tall Dark Stranger from WA Oaks winner Sports Package (1.56.9, $151K), which comes from the incredibly successful Sokys Number family.
It is the Sportswriter mare’s first foal. She is a half-sister to four winners, including Group One WA Two-Year-Old Diamond winner Cimorene (1.55.9, $117K) and Bettor Pack It (1.56.4, $99K).
Sports Package’s grandam, WA Two-Year-Old Pearl Classic placegetter Saabrina, is a sister to Ferguson’s outstanding stallion Saab (1.57.1, $577K), which is one of the few pacers to win WA’s big four classics – the Golden Slipper, WA Derby, Golden Nugget and WA Pacing Cup.
Another full brother, Talladega (P2,1.57.8, $411K), was 1999 Australian Two-Year-Old Colt of the Year and won the WA Derby at three.
They are all from broodmare gem, New Zealabd-bred mare Sokys Number, which left 11 winners of 111 races and $1.4million in stakes.
Interestingly, Tall Dark Stranger’s dam Precocious Beauty and Sports Package’s sire Sportswriter are half brother and sister, giving him a double cross of champion US broodmare Precious Beauty.
Lot 377 a colt by boom US sire Downbytheseaside from Group 1 winning mare Bettor Beach Belle (P2,1.58.2, $137K), who was placed in the Diamond Classic as a two-year-old and won the Three-Year-Old Westbred Final and the WA Country Oaks the following year.
This is her first foal.
Her dam Art On The Beach won the WA Sales Classic and has left seven winners, including WA Pearl Classic winner Swagga (P2,1.58.4, $102K) and Major Artist (1.57.4, $101K).
Art On The Beach is a half-sister to six winners, including multiple Group One placegetter Indisputable (2.00.2, $127K).
This colt also has a line of Beach Towel on both sides of his pedigree.
The cross of Downbytheseaside over Bettors Delight mares produced last year’s APG Final winner The Bettor Side (1.57.5, $77K), star NZ filly Coastal Babe (1.56.2, $360K) and 2024 WA Oaks runner-up Atlantic Gem (1.56.4, $93K).
