EVERGREEN pacer Bulletproof Boy has guaranteed himself a start in next month's A G Hunter Cup.

Already a strong contender for a berth in the Grand Circuit event in Melton on February 1, Bulletproof Boy is assured a position in the field thanks to his Bendigo Cup success last Saturday night.

The gelding's latest victory completed a winning hat-trick, while his last 12 starts consist of six wins and two seconds.

Thrilled with his stable flagship's performance, trainer Scott Ewen has set his sights firmly on the time-honoured feature.

"I really want to have a crack at the Hunter Cup and I think he's going well enough," Ewen said. "There are a few more options between now and then, but the Hunter Cup is where I am aiming.

"The Ballarat Cup in a fortnight will be next as it fits in nicely as it is also a fortnight out from the Hunter Cup."

With James Herbertson holding the reins, Bulletproof Boy was settled midfield from his second row draw as hot favourite, Tact Mcloed, led from barrier five.

Sent forward to gain the ideal one-one trail at the bell, Bulletproof Boy dug deep along the home straight to reach the front in the final stride, scoring by a short half-head from Tact Mcloed.

In a tight finish, Ultimate Vinnie was a metre away third.

"What a great run," Herbertson said. "He worked midrace when the tempo was on and still ran home strongly.

"A 10-year-old racing like a pacer half his age..he's just a wonder!"

Rating 1:55.7 over 2650 metres, Bulletproof Boy took his record to 45 wins and 44 placings from 203 starts for earnings of $647,541.
