HANDY youngster Just Jimmy snapped a frustrating run of near misses yesterday.

Runner-up during his last three starts - and four of his recent five - Just Jimmy broke his maiden at Globe Derby.

Thrilled with the result, driver Sharni Newman hopes the victory is the beginning of a successful stint for the two-year-old, which is trained by her mother, Sharon.

"He'd finished second at four of his eight starts, so he deserved the win," Newman said. "Obviously he's been knocking on the door, but it was starting to feel like he would never get there though.

"He is just so green, which is why he is out of the draw, but I felt he was the best in the race if he put it all together.

"Hopefully this will be the first of many wins to come."

Eased to the tail of the field from barrier seven as Rickshawshadow led from gate three, Just Jimmy was taken three-wide without cover at the bell.

"They were running along and I was thinking we're a bit far back so I've got to get up there and have a crack," Newman said.

Sustaining a strong sprint, the son of Rock N Roll World reached the lead in the last stride to score by a head from the pacemaker.

Intriguing Girl was seven-and-a-half metres away third in 2:00 over 1800 metres.

"He felt good, and when I pulled him out, he did all the work," Newman said. "On the corner I thought he had a pretty good chance and he stuck his neck out on the line."
