Long drought broken
BASED on his drought-breaking victory last Saturday night, The Irishman looks set to forge a successful career in South Australia.
Absent from the winners' circle since scoring at Albion Park in November 2023, The Irishman won at his second start for trainer Reece Moore.
Runner-up in Port Pirie upon debut, the son of Shadow Play overcame a back row draw with Dani Hill in the cart.
"He hadn't won for a while, so glad to see him get one on the board so quickly since getting here," Moore said. "He is a happy going horse, and given the way he went, he should win a couple more."
Beginning from barrier nine, The Irishman was settled three-back along the pegs as Barney Fella led from gate two.
Gaining a perfect inside run along the home straight, the gelding scored by half-neck from Barney Fella, with White Star Village three metres away third in 2:00 over 1800 metres.
"He came from so far back down the back, and his sectionals were pretty good, which suggest he has more wins in him," Reece said.
"I'll keep poking him along at Globe Derby and Port Pirie and see how he goes as he gets up in grade."
