KEAYANG ZAHARA

LOOK out New Zealand, electrifying filly Keayang Zahara is heading your way.

Extending her undefeated record to 11 by capturing the Victoria Trotters' Derby in Maryborough just moments ago, Keayang Zahara is being aimed at three majors on the other side of the Tasman.

Keayang Zahara is due to leave Australia on November 4, with The Ascent - a $500,000 slot race for three-year-old trotting fillies - her first target.

The daughter of Volstead will then be aimed at the New Zealand Trotters' Oaks a fortnight later and the Derby on December 6.

"She is all set for the slot race and Oaks in New Zealand," trainer Marg Lee said. "If all is well, then we will look at the Derby, but we'll play it by ear with that one.

"She is also eligible for the Breeders' Crown back home, but I'm not sure about that.

"The New Zealand races could see her out for the season...we'll let her tell us if she's had enough."

With Jason Lee holding the reins during her latest triumph, Keayang Zahara was given time to settle into her stride from the inside of the second row as Valtino led from barrier four.

Angled three-wide approaching the bell, Keayang Zahara worked to the lead before kicking clear along the home straight to score by eight-and-a-half metres from Valtino, with Pinnie a metre away third.

"They weren't going really hard so I thought I'd go as I didn't want to get stuck in traffic," Jason said. "Once she got the front she did it quite comfortably and hit the line under her own steam."

By rating 2:01.1 over 2690 metres, Keayang Zahara became just the eighth filly to complete Oaks and Derby double.

Lunar Lass was the ground breaker in 1984, with Corrans Image (1990), Galleons Paradise (’97), Solar Fire (’98), Zesta (2002), Une Belle Allure (2017) and Pink Galahs (2020) following suit.
