Mullet Man's magic milestone
HARNESS racing's most famous hairdo notched a personal milestone last night.
Driving Harro Hill to glory in Port Pirie, Corey 'Hairy' Johnson registered his 250th win, just five seasons after breaking his maiden with Emerging Art at Globe Derby.
While Johnson is happy with moment in the spotlight, the young star's mullet is also believed to have achieved a highlight.
"It was brought to my attention recently that I was closing in on 250 wins, so there was a bit of a countdown," Johnson said. "I'm rapt to get to that number, but it also means the end of my claim over here in South Australia.
"Yeah, I've been growing the 'do' for a few years now and I reckon that'd be 150 wins for the mullet!"
After enjoying the perfect one-one trip, Harro Hill completed a soft seven-and-a-half metre win from Letsgetrowdy, with Lochinvar Jewells five metres away third.
Trained by Ryan and Trent Hoare, the daughter of Art Major rated 1:59.3 over 2050 metres.
"She felt like she was travelling easily all the way, and when I asked her to go, she just grabbed the bit and went," Johnson said. "She hit the line well and had plenty left in the tank."
In another news for Johnson, he is set to represent South Australia in next month's Australasian Young Drivers' Championship, which begins with heats at Club Menangle on December 10.
The series then moves to Bathurst, Penrith and Newcastle before returning to Menangle on Inter Dominion Final night - December 14.
Three South Australians have captured the title since its inauguration in 1976, with Chris Lewis triumphant in '77, followed by Jamie Williams in '84 and Dani Hill in 2009.
"I finished fourth in last season's series and hopefully I can do better this time around," Johnson said. "It would be great to bring the title back to SA."
When pressed if he would cut his hair should he win the series, Johnson was direct with his response.
"No chance," Johnson declared. "It's like Samson's hair - if I cut it, I'll lose my edge!"
