NIGHT racing is set to return to the Gawler Harness Racing Club following a decision by Harness Racing SA to invest in the venture as part of a master plan to strengthen the site as a major racing venue.

The site is likely to see a range of new and exciting developments over time as part of a decision by the State Government to undertake a code amendment of the locality.

Harness Racing South Australia Chair Dr Carlo D’Ortenzio, said the: “reintroduction of night racing at Gawler is expected to attract increased attendance, support local businesses and further cement the venue’s role as a key community asset in the region.”

“The investment will also help set the foundation to attract increased tourism to South Australia, supporting Harness Racing SA’s ability to secure a future national-level event that would draw visitors from interstate and deliver broader economic benefits to the state.”

The decision to reintroduce night racing has been welcomed by the Member for Light, and Duty Member for Frome, Tony Piccolo, who said the decision by Harness Racing SA to invest in the site has been the catalyst to undertake the code-amendment.

“This decision has enormous potential for the locality given its discrete but strategic location opening a range of opportunities for development and reinforcing the importance of the equine industry to the region,” said Piccolo.

Following meeting with the Buchfelde community, Piccolo advocated for a code amendment process, and that it should be funded by the State Government.

“I was recently advised the State Government has agreed to undertake the code amendment and also make a contribution to the lighting project, given its importance to the long-term financial sustainability of the industry,” Piccolo said.

Piccolo said the funding will support infrastructure and operational improvements at the Gawler Harness Racing Club, enabling the venue to host night racing and expand its role as a vibrant community hub for events, families and visitors.

“The investment reflects the Malinauskas Government’s commitment to regional communities and industries that deliver both economic and social returns,” Piccolo said.

“Harness racing is part of Gawler’s identity, and this investment will ensure the club can continue to grow, innovate and bring people together.

“Night racing will attract new audiences, create more opportunities for local events and hospitality, and strengthen a sport that supports hundreds of South Australian families. I’m proud to have successfully advocated for funding that delivers real outcomes for our community.”

Gawler Harness Racing Club President Jill Nielson thanked Piccolo and the State Government for their support.

“This is an incredibly important investment for our club and our members,” President Nielson said.
“We sincerely thank the Member for Light, Tony Piccolo MP and the South Australian Government for backing harness racing at Gawler.

“Night racing will allow us to host more community events, grow participation and ensure our facilities are fit for the future.”

Dr D’Ortenzio said the funding recognised the significant contribution the industry makes across the state.

“Harness racing supports the livelihoods of more than 1000 participants across South Australia and contributes over $76 million in direct and indirect economic impact to our state each year,” Dr D’Ortenzio said.

“We thank Tony Piccolo MP and Premier Peter Malinauskas for their continued support of an industry that delivers jobs, regional investment and strong community connections.”
