Perfect manners make the difference

Perfect manners make the difference

ACCORDING to the adage "Manners Maketh Man", but in harness racing terms, manners maketh wins.

That fact was never more evident than the Nutrien Sales Classic Final for two-year-old trotters in Melton last Saturday night.

Only four of the 12 runners remained in their stride throughout the $75,000 feature, with the quartet the first four across the finish, led by Rainbow Jester.

"I said before the race how important manners are, especially with young trotters," trainer Dennis Day said. "Thankfully he kept his manners in check and was able to come away with another win.

"As soon as I negotiated that first turn with him and I took in what was happening around me, I got pretty confident with him."

Beginning solidly from his second row draw, Rainbow Jester was settled three-back along the pegs as Sebastians Waiting led the foursome in 'Indian file'.

Angled away from the inside leaving the back straight, the son of Majestic Son cruised to a soft 33-and-a-half metre win from Sioux Warrior, with Sebastians Waiting a head away third.

"He was travelling nicely all the way and I knew it was just a matter of making my run down the back," Day said. "I never had to go for him at any stage and he raced to the line under his own steam."

Rating 2:03.8 over 2240 metres, Rainbow Jester maintained his perfect record from three starts.

To be given an easy week, the colt will then be aimed at the New South Wales Foundation Series before returning to Victoria for the Australasian Breeders' Crown later in the season.

"He has come through the run in terrific condition," Day said. "He's eaten up, is relaxed and bright.

"I'm pleased he has handled the two trips to Victoria liked a seasoned horse and will give him a few days off before we get ready for the Foundation next month."
