Promising freshman heading interstate
A TRIP across the border is on the cards for promising freshman Lambro Mach.
Taking his record to two wins and a second from three starts with his success in last Saturday night's Golden Nursery at Globe Derby, Lambro Mach is poised to undertake a Victorian campaign.
Mount Gambier trainer David Phillips' explained his decision to head interstate is two-fold.
"He isn't eligible for the upcoming Southern Cross because of a paperwork oversight," Phillips explained. "His owners tried to make a late payment fee, but they wouldn't accept it, which limits his options here.
"He is eligible for the Vicbred though, so we'll head over there to try and win his bonus.
"There is a race for him in Melton in a few weeks, so I will aim him at that.
"If he doesn't have any luck there, I will give him another start as we'd like to win the bonus before it comes down to less than half in January."
Driven by former Victorian horsewoman Gaita Pullicino during his latest triumph, Lambro Mach was given time to settle into his stride from the second row before being sent forward to test the leader, Always Dancing, from the 'death seat'.
With the pair matching stride for the final 400 metres, Lambro Mach reached the front in the shadows of the post to score by a short half-head.
Splash Of Paynt was nine metres away third in 1:57.1 over 1800 metres.
"That was a terrific run from him," Phillips said. "He did all the work and still proved too strong on the line.
"He shows a tremendous amount of potential and I can't see any reason why he won't keep improving as he goes along."
