Promising youngster heading interstate
A TRIP across the border is on the cards for promising youngster Captain Hammerhead.
Discussing plans for the three-year-old following his success in last night's Nutrien Final in Bendigo, trainer David Moran revealed he is considering heading to Club Menangle for next weekend's The Singo.
The Singo is a concept race by John Singleton, who will select a runner from the field to fill his slot in The Eureka at the world class venue on September 2.
Interestingly, Singleton won't necessarily pick the winner of the $50,000 feature as his representative.
"I'm not saying he can win a race like The Eureka, but he has certainly earned his shot at it," Moran said. "I've been toying with the idea of going to Menangle for The Singo, and given the way he went last night, it's close to certain we will head up now.
"I wouldn't say it's a bold statement to think he could win The Singo and still prove competitive against the best of his age further down the track."
With Moran in the cart during his latest outing, Captain Hammerhead led throughout from the pole to score by a metre-and-a-half from Dangerous.
Queensland raider Sure Thing Captain was four metres away third.
"I thought his run in the heat was good and I knew he'd be hard to beat," Moran said. "When he was able to lead I was reasonably confident they'd have trouble catching him and it all worked out well."
Rating 1:54.3 over 2150 metres, the son of Captaintreacherous took his record to five wins, three placings and earnings of $88,534 from 10 starts for owner Domenic Martello.
