Raider chasing more Group One glory
FRESH from claiming the industry's greatest prize last weekend, Jason Grimson will chase more Group One glory in Victoria before heading back to his New South Wales home.
Just to recap, Grimson was the toast of the sport after preparing I Cast No Shadow to capture the Inter Dominion Final at Tabcorp Park Melton.
I Cast No Shadow's triumph saw Grimson become just the third trainer to win the Championship in consecutive years with different pacers, having secured last season's Club Menangle-based decider with Boncel Benjamin.
Bob Knight was the ground breaker, scoring at Harold Park with Our Maestro in 1988 and in Perth with Jodie’s Babe in 1989.
Power couple Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen were triumphant with Smolda in 2016 and Lazarus in 2017, with both wins recorded at Gloucester Park.
On a side note, former star pacer Captain Sandy is the only campaigner to win two Inter Dominions for different trainers.
Jock Bain prepared Captain Sandy to secure the 1950 series at the Ascot Vale Showgrounds, while Dinny Nolan rejuvenated the retired veteran to capture the 1953 Perth edition.
As for Grimson's pending assignment, he has two runners in Saturday night's Cranbourne Cup.
Winner of his last two starts, Fire Fox has drawn barrier three, with Major Meister to come from gate four.
Major Meister completed an impressive debut for Grimson when rating 1:52.9 over 1710 metres in Ballarat three weeks ago.
"They both go into Saturday night's race feeling terrific," Grimson said. "It's a strong field, but they have drawn well and can hopefully play a role in the finish."
