IF LAST year's result is any indicator, being the rank outsider in the Miracle Mile means little come race night.

A $51 shot in the 2024 edition, New Zealand raider Sooner The Bettor upstaged all but one of his rivals to finish second in Australasia's premier sprint.

Driven by Gavin Fitzpatrick, the Barry Purdon and Scott Phelan-trained stallion began from barrier four before gaining the ideal one-one trip and finishing two-and-a-half metres behind Leap To Fame.

Set to contest tonight's running at Club Menangle, Sooner The Bettor is again friendless in betting.

TAB FIxed Odds have the son of Bettors Delight listed at $61, with Leap To Fame a $2 favourite to successfully defend his title.

As was the case last year, Sooner The Bettor will be driven by Fitzpatrick having drawn barrier four.

Pleased with the five-year-old's progress, Purdon stated Sooner The Bettor is capable of causing another surprise in the Garrard's-sponsored Grand Circuit event.

"We were happy with his run when third in last week's qualifier and he has come along nicely since," Purdon said.

"There is no doubt he is up against it in such a strong field, but as he showed last year, he is up to the task.

"It will all come down to what kind of run he gets, but he can surprise a few."
