Ready for first-up success
FRESH from a triumphant raid south of the border, astute trainer Blake Fitzpatrick hopes to extend his run of success at Club Menangle today.
Fitzpatrick crossed the Murray River last weekend to contest a Breeders' Crown Final in Melton with quality trotter Valtino.
To connections delight, the son of Love You proved too good for his rivals to notch his third major victory from 24 starts.
With local reinsman Greg Sugars in the cart, Valtino was given time to settle into his stride before being sent three-wide at the bell and sustaining a strong sprint to beat Mister Blindside and Thunda Struck in 1:56.3 over 2240 metres.
In what is the perfect end to his season, Valtino is heading for a well-earned break during which the three-year-old may endure 'the cruelest cut'!
"He has done a terrific job in his first two seasons," Fitzpatrick said. "He's won the Nutrien, Vicbed and Breeders' Crown Finals while also finishing among the placegetters in Nutrien and Vicbed Finals and the Victoria Derby.
"Last night was a great way to end his juvenile days and he will go for a long break now.
"We're thinking about gelding while he is having time off, but will make a decision on that during the next week or so."
As for his pending visit to Menangle, Fitzpatrick will be represented by handy pacer Some Chevron in the final event on the card.
First-up since a disappointing performance on August 13, Some Chevron trialled in strong fashion in Penrith a fortnight ago.
To be driven by Fitzpatrick's daughter, Zara, has drawn to search for the lead from barrier three.
"The time off served him well and he has come back nice and fresh," Fitzpatrick said. "I was pleased with his trial and his work has lifted since, so he is ready to go.
"It's a nice draw and a suitable race for him first-up and he will go very close.
"Obviously he will benefit from the outing and be better again next time around."
