Ready to 'go to the mattresses'
CHAMPION horseman Luke McCarthy is ready to 'go to the mattresses' this weekend.
Widely-regarded as the 'Godfather' of Club Menangle, McCarthy is poised to contest Saturday night's Italian Cup at the world class venue.
Fittingly McCarthy will compete in the Listed Classic with Don Hugo.
Sent for a well-earned break following his handy fourth in the Inter Dominion Final at Albion Park on July 19, Don Hugo is no stranger to glory around the 1400-metre circuit.
Along with winning Australasia's premier sprint - Miracle Mile - in March, Don Hugo captured last season's Inter Dominion at his 'casa' track!
Pleased with the five-year-old's progress, McCarthy is confident Don Hugo can complete a first-up victory.
TAB Fixed Odds agree, with Don Hugo listed as a $1.70 favourite from barrier two.
Runner-up in the recent Victoria Cup, Hi Manameisjeff is considered the main danger at $5 from gate eight.
Evergreen veteran Max Delight is on the third line of betting at $6.50 from barrier three.
"I trialled him around Penrith a few weeks ago and was very happy with his run," McCarthy said. "His work has really sharpened since and he's ready to go.
"Obviously he'll improve on whatever he does this weekend, but I'm confident enough with him, especially from the draw."
