TECHNICALLY he abdicated the throne, but to James Herbertson that means nothing heading into next week's Australian Drivers' Championship.

Capturing the 2022 edition of the tournament, Herbertson bypassed his title defence last season as Queenslander Nathan Dawson ascended to the throne.

"I guess I wasn't dethroned, but it doesn't count," Herbertson said. "I wasn't there to back it up the next year, so I'm not the co-defending champion by a technicality.

"Nathan has the title and we're all just trying to get it off him.

"Hopefully the breaks go my way and I'll get it back."

A dozen drivers - two from each state - will clash over 10 heats at Globe Derby on December 29 for the honour of the nation's best for 2024.

Herbertson will be joined in the Big V silks by legendary reinsman Chris Alford.

"Series like this are always fun," Herbertson said. "You're as serious as can be on the track, but off it, you're having a laugh and a good time.

"It will be great to get over there and compete against such quality drivers."

Although he believes luck plays a major role in deciding the result, Herbertson rates local reinsman Wayne Hill as the one to beat.

Hill has also enjoyed success in the tournament, winning the 2016 version.

"A major part of these types of series come down to luck," Herbertson said. "Luck in getting the better horses to drive and luck with the barrier draws.

"Wayne is one of the Kings of Globe Derby and has the advantage of knowing the local form, which gives him an edge as the one to beat."
