RESPECTED horseman Darren Reay has been recognised for his outstanding commitment to harness racing.

Attending last weekend's Hunter Valley Owners' and Trainers' Awards Night, Reay was surprised to find himself the centre of attention.

As part of the festivities, the association announced Reay as the Dick Osborn Award winner for distinguished service to the industry.

Osborn was the King of the Hunter Valley during the 1970s and '80s, winning premiership seemingly at will.

As for Reay, he has carved a successful career as a trainer and breeder at Medowie Lodge, which was founded by his late father, Tommy, during the 1990s.

Tommy named the establishment after Medowie Prince, which he bred.

A Group Two winner during the 1990s, Medowie Prince registered 33 wins and 21 placings for earnings of $198,510.

"It was a tremendous surprise," Reay said. "I had no idea this was on the cards.

"I'm very honoured and humbled at the same time.

"As thrilled as I am to receive such an award, it is even more of a thrill knowing I have joined my father on the honour roll.

"Dad received the award about a decade ago."
