Top pacer likely to bypass Hunter Cup
ALTHOUGH it remains an option, a trip south of the border is unlikely with top pacer Expensive Ego.
Returning to his best with a 1:49.2 win at Club Menangle a fortnight ago, Expensive Ego would be considered a serious contender in the A G Hunter Cup, however, trainer Belinda McCarthy is likely to bypass the Grand Circuit event with the Australian Pacing Gold purchase.
The Hunter Cup is scheduled to be conducted at Tabcorp Park Melton on February 4.
Despite the $500,000 stake, McCarthy stated she is leaning towards racing Expensive Ego "close to home" in preparation for the Carnival Of Miracles.
The Carnival is headlined by Club Menangle's $1million Garrards Miracle Mile, which is programmed for March 4.
"A decision will be made next week, but at this stage it is unlikely he will go to Victoria," McCarthy said. "With the Miracle Mile only a month later we're leaning towards just racing him close to home.
"That said, anything could change during the next week, but for now, it remains very doubtful."
Set to return to the world class venue tomorrow night, Expensive Ego is a $1.28 TAB Fixed Odds favourite despite drawing the outside of the front row.
Drawn barrier seven, Jay Ok is the only other runner under double figures at $8.50.
McCarthy will also be represented by Artillery, which is considered a $26 outsider from gate eight.
"No one likes to draw out wide, but it is what it is," McCarthy said. "It shouldn't be a problem for him.
"Artillery is going really well and can certainly figure in the finish again."
