Touch of luck makes a huge difference
A TOUCH of luck can make a huge difference according to trainer Matt Maguire.
And given the result of yesterday's Kapunda Trotters' Cup, it is difficult to argue with his assessment.
A fortnight ago Maguire had My Bad Habits engaged in the Ladbrokes Trotters' Cup, with the gelding finishing fourth as the favourite.
Fast forward to the Kapunda feature and My Bad Habits emerged triumphant as a $7.50 shot as the $2.80 public elect Tweedledee ran ninth.
"The fields are just so even that it quite often comes down to which one gets the right run," Maguire said. "I was very confident with him before his last run, but nothing really went his way.
"He got shuffled back then hit the line hard, so I was happy with the run, but was left wondering what could have been if he got a better trip.
"Going into yesterday I knew he was ready to win, and felt if things went better for him, he would get the job done."
Driven by Bernadette Page, My Bad Habits began well from his 10-metre handicap to be three-back in the running line as Wishing Star led from four.
Taken four-wide around the home turn, the son of Skyvalley sprinted to a three-and-a-half metre win from Wishing Star, with Stingofawasp four-and-a-half metres away third.
"It was a top run, but an even better drive by Bern," Maguire said. "Bern deserves a lot of credit for this horse as she puts so much time into him behind the scenes.
"He's qualified for the South Australia Trotters' Cup on October 26 and will likely go into that fresh now.
"If he can run in the heat I will put him around in that, otherwise wait until the Cup."
