Tough draw threatens King's reign
KINGS GUARD

IN-FORM squaregaiter Kings Guard faces a tough task in his bid for a winning hat-trick.

Successful in the Elmore and Cobram Trotters' Cup during his past two outings, Kings Guard is engaged in tonight's Shepparton meeting for trainer Stephen Boyington.

To Boyington's dismay, the son of Love You has drawn awkwardly in barrier five over 2190 metres.

"It would have been better if he drew closer to the inside," Boyington said. "He's not brilliant off the arm, but is getting better.

"At this stage, you've got to drive him how he wants to be driven, as in some ways, he's still a big baby.

"He's six, but has only had 25 starts and I reckon he will be a very nice trotter in another 12 months."

Despite his starting position, Kings Guard is vying for favouritism at $2.80 with TAB Fixed Odds.

Although first-up from a seven-week break, Rapid Return heads the market at $2.70 from gate six for David Abrahams.

Aldebaran Acrux is also in the mix at $3.20 from barrier four.

"I'd say Aldebaran Acrux is the one to beat," Boyington said. "He's race fit and is drawn inside us."
