Trainer happy to admit he was wrong
BY HIS own admission, Troy Williams didn't have a lot of faith in Affaire De Cover ahead of last Saturday night's Trotters' Carousel Final at Club Menangle.
In fact, Williams was all but certain Affaire De Cover wouldn't win, he decided to back-up the gelding at the world class venue 72 hours later!
"I didn't give him a big chance in the Final," Williams said. "I thought if he finished in the top five I'd be happy, which is why I entered him for Tuesday as well.
"He is a nice bread and butter horse, but is not a true Saturday night class trotter and is better suited to Tuesdays where he can still earn good money."
On this occasion, Williams is more than happy to admit he was wrong after Affaire De Cover captured the $25,500 feature.
Driven by Chris Geary, Affaire De Cover caused an upset as a $34 chance to score by a head from $21 shot Satin Stride.
Aldebaran Jensen was a neck away third as the $151 rank outsider.
"The way the race was run really played into his hands," Williams said.
Rating 1:59.1 over 2300 metres, Affaire De Cover was the second leg of a double for Williams who prepared Caulonia Courage to win in 1:51.8 over a mile.
As for Affaire De Cover's pending assignment, the son of Love You has drawn the widest in a field of 10 over 1609 metres.
"He may as well have drawn out in the carpark, but it is what it is," Williams said. "He has been bouncing around since Saturday night and is ready to go again, but he will need things to go his way."
