HONOLUA BAY

A MAIDEN at Club Menangle today is bound to spark plenty of interest.

Poised to make his debut in race three, exceptionally-bred gelding The Niteshift has a strong family heritage to live up to.

By Somebeachsomewhere, The Niteshift is from former handy mare National Gallery, which has exceeded her racing feats as a broodmare.

On the track, National Gallery won 11 of her 32 starts while finishing among the placings on 12 occassions, with her victories including the Southwest and Riverina Oaks.

In the breeding barn, National Gallery boasts a perfect record from seven starters, with her progeny including high class pacer Honolua Bay.

Restricted to 37 starts, Honolua Bay registered 22 wins and eight placings for earnings of $887,490.

Honolua Bay's biggest triumph was in the 2023 Group One A G Hunter Cup in Melton for premier trainer Emma Stewart.

National Gallery is also the dam of Somethin Bout Eily, which is a 2022 Group One winner at Club Menangle.

The family also includes millionaire pacer None Better.

While he has a long way to go before he is listed as a 'black type' alongside his two mentioned siblings, The Niteshift is favoured to begin his career on a successful note.

Trained by Luke McCarthy, The Niteshift is a $2.20 favourite in early betting markets.

To be driven by Jack Callaghan, the three-year-old has drawn to lead throughout from barrier two.

"He's a pretty nice type, but still very green," McCarthy said. "He has had three trials and gone along well.

"I've been happy with his work and he has drawn to make a good go of it.

"He'll be hard to beat, but whatever he does, he will be better for the experience."

Later on the card McCarthy will be represented by another well-bred gelding, Silver Pistol.

Unplaced upon debut for McCarthy three weeks ago in what was his first outing in four months, Silver Pistol is expected to strip fitter this time around.

Callaghan will take the reins behind the four-year-old from barrier seven.

Rudy Gee rounds out McCarthy's assault on the program, with the gelding to begin from gate two in the final event on the card.

A last start winner in Newcastle, where he rated 1:53.6 over 2030 metres, Rudy Gee will be partnered by Michael Stanley.

Stanley trained the son of American Ideal before he found his way into Chantal Turpin's Queensland stable in March 2025.

Rudy Gee joined McCarthy's team eight weeks ago.
