Win puts extra spring in step

PROMINENT horseman Paul Cavallaro has an extra spring in his step following yesterday's Southern Cross heats at Globe Derby.

Cavallaro contested the opening qualifier for two-year-old colts and geldings with Gym Junkie, which proved he has recovered from a recent virus.

Runner-up in the Lordship Stake after working in the 'death seat' on October 15, Gym Junkie was "crook as a dog" the following morning.

Given a bref let-up, the son of Stay Hungry showed signs of his best by outclassing his rivals to book a berth in the Final on December 20.

"I'm happy with the way he went, especially given he has just gotten over a cold," Cavallaro said. "The morning after the Lordship he was far from himself, then the cold went right through the entire stable.

"Usually he is a pain to deal with, very bullish, but he was lethargic and sedate.

"He's over that and back to his painful ways, which is a good sign."

Driven by Gaita Pullicino, Gym Junkie led throughout from barrier four to account for Steam Machine and Nevada Gambler.

"The Southern Cross has been the main aim with him for a while, so thankfully he has come right again at the right time," Cavallaro said. "He will gain a fair bit from that run and be better again for the Final."

With a record of three wins and four placings from 10 starts, Gym Junkie rated 1:58.6 over 1800 metres, with his time half a second quicker than Hez So Royal in the opening qualifier.
