Winter reprieve awaits promising youngster
A WINTER reprieve awaits promising youngster Heeza Malteeza.
Returning from a six-week break at Club Menangle on Saturday night, Heeza Malteeza is being aimed at a Queensland campaign by trainer Dylan Xerri.
Xerri has set his sights on several features during the Sunshine State's main carnival, including the Queensland Derby at Albion Park on July 19.
"He had a good break after his win at Menangle in mid April and is ready to go again," Xerri said. "The aim this time in is to head to Queensland for some of their big races next month.
"He will need things to go his way at that level, but I have no doubt he will be competitive.
"I'll worry about Saturday night first, then look further ahead after that."
To be driven by Bailey McDonough, Heeza Malteeza has drawn wide in barrier six over a mile.
"I'm not concerned about the draw," Xerri said. "There is a bit of speed inside him, so he'll be eased out of the gate and settled towards the back.
"We'll look to come with one big run and hope he can figure in the finish.
"As good as he is feeling, he will need the run."
