Young reinsman on target for Inter glory
YOUNG reinsman Riley Pace hopes to eclipse one of his father's feats when he heads to Tabcorp Park Melton on Saturday night.
A recent heat winner at the same venue, Pace is engaged in the Inter Dominion Pony Trot.
For miniature ponies, the Final will be conducted over 600 metres, with Pace and his stable star Wheres Wally the back markers.
Pace and Wally will give the front line a 20-metre head start.
"I'm really looking forward to it," Pace said. "We won the heat, but it is going to be harder in the Final.
"I'm excited and nervous."
Bred to be in the industry with his grandfather Vic and Uncle Joe multiple feature winners, Pace is the son of Darren, who won the 2001 Brisbane Trotters' Inter Dominion Consolation with Avatar.
"Dad has done okay winning a Consolation, but I want to go one better and win an Inter Dominion Final," Pace said.
Planning to make the transition to race driving late next year, Pace's dream is to enjoy the solid rate of success his family have experienced.
"I'm 16 next September and want to apply for my licence straight away," Pace said. "I'd love to be able to make a go of it as a driver.
"My brother Blake already drives, and then once I start, I don't think Dad will get a turn anymore.
"If I can one day win an Inter Dominion Consolation like Dad I will be pretty happy."
